Facial Recognition Technology to Check into Hotels

This article caught my attention. The Singapore Tourism Board was collaborating with the hotel industry to check in via self-service kiosks using facial recognition technology.

Self-service check-in at hotels make a lot of sense, as this function is traditionally very labour intensive. Now that Singapore is tighter on labour, self-service can bring about productivity improvements.

What intrigued me, however, was the need for facial recognition technology. I have been to hotels in UK where they have simple self-service check-in machines, without the use of facial recognition. You just enter your reservation number, fill in some details, swipe your credit card, and the machine would issue your room key plus receipt. For example, the Premier Inn chain of budget hotels in UK has deployed such machines widely.

So why do Singapore hotels require facial recognition? I don't know but perhaps it is for better security.

Thanks for reading.
