Blogging For Sharing Knowledge

The Sunday Times (11th May) carried an article "Getting paid for blogging" which caught my attention. For me, blogging is a hobby, a way to share knowledge with other interested parties. I don't think blogging can feed my family and I, at least not the way I blog.

So it was very interesting to read the experiences of well known Singapore bloggers. Here are some facts I found interesting as reported by the Sunday Times article.

Well known Singapore Bloggers
Wendy Cheng aka Xiaxue
Xiaxue started blogging full time in 2005, which means she can celebrated her 10th anniversary as a blogger in 2015, when Singapore celebrates our 50th National Day! Nice. Previously, she was personal assistant to a doctor.

The article says that her blog has about 40,000 daily views and she can make a five-figure sum in good months. Sounds impressive. Xiaxue, 30, says that she used to approach brands she liked and offer them coverage. These days, however, clients go to her. The article claims that she receives up to five requests for event coverage a day. Sounds good! I guess that would be more than enough work to keep her busy and earn a decent income.

Brad Lau aka ladyironchef
Brad, 27, is the person behind ladyironchef. I visit this food blog quite a bit and this is the first time I found out that the owner isn't female! hah. Brad runs the site with his fiancee Melody Yap. They receive so many invitations to go for free tastings that he no longer accepts them. Looks like he has more business than he can cope with!

"We need to prioritise our paying clients", he says. He does campaigns with clients, which he declines to name, marketing their products with their approved messages. Very interesting. From his site, I can't tell which are the approved messages and which are his paying clients.

More interesting is that his blog, started 7 years ago, gets an average of 2.5 Million page views a month. That translates to more than 80K a day. Looks like his views are double that of Xiaxue's!

Daniel Ang of DanielFoodDiary.com
Daniel Ang says his popularity has allowed him to revise his fees upwards five times over the last three years. He usually charges a four-figure sum for advertorials. His blog gets 1.2 million page views a month.

Kelvin Ang of cheekiemonkie.net
Kelvin has taken his family on trips sponsored by Hong Kong Disneyland to check out the theme park and by milk powder brand Friso to Amsterdam. The article did not reveal how many views cheekiemonkie.net gets a month.

Charging for Advertorials
SundayLife! spoke to 10 bloggers, who all say they charge for advertorials, ranging from hundreds of dollars to five-figure sums. Xiaxue says she used to charge $300 for an advertorial, but now commands about $4,000 for such a post.

Some readers have expressed reservations about such advertorials. How can they trust the blogger to critique the product fairly, when there is conflict of interest? The best case scenario is where a blogger writes about a product or service without receiving payment. But that may be unrealistic. These bloggers obviously need to make a living. Oh well, readers should be discerning enough and trust everything they read on blogs.

My LondonProperty123 Blog
Well, the blog is a hobby, and a fun one. Based on a recent reader survey, I am glad that the blog has proven interesting and useful, at least to some readers. The feedback has been very encouraging. My blog is still very new, only about 2 months old.

Blog Views Based on my Google Analytics Statistics Page for the period Mar 18, 2014 to May 11, 2014.  I started my blog in early March 2014 but I only enabled Google Analytics from March 18.

Unique Users - 2,471
Page views - 18,465

I am a long way from a 100,000 views a month, let alone a million! But never mind, it is not just about pageviews. It is about sharing knowledge.  Anyway, the blog is still young.  Maybe it will grow.

Geographical Reach
75% of my readers are from Singapore. I am also cheered that I have significant number of readers from Malysia, UK and Hong Kong.

London Property Investment - Global Audience
Investing in London is of global interest, based on all the money flowing in.

Therefore, I think that the content in my blog would potentially be of interest to readers in USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and other English-speaking countries.

However, I have no clue on how to reach out to these readers, since I assume my blog may not appear in their search engines and all that. Well, if anybody has good ideas to extend the reach, please let me know! You can also visit my community forum and start a discussion.

Meanwhile, I will just keep chugging along and I hope to bring my readers useful articles that will extend and enhance our knowledge and experiences. Thank you for reading.

Happy Investing!
